“The natural healing force within each one of us is the greatest force in getting well. Our food should be our medicine. Our medicine should be our food.” – Hippocrates

What is Alternative Medicine?

It is a health care practice which does not follow generally accepted medical methods and may not have a scientific explanation for its effectiveness. Examples of alternative medicines are homeopathy and herbal medicine.

The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) recognizes five main categories of alternative medicine:

  • Mind-body medicine
  • Whole body systems
  • Manipulative and body-based practices
  • Energy medicine
  • Biologically based practices

Interchangeably used “Alternative medicine”, “complementary medicine”, “holistic medicine”, “natural medicine”, “unorthodox medicine”, “fringe medicine”, “unconventional medicine”, and “new age medicine” have the same meaning.
